Kona Marathon Events
The Kona Marathon and Family Runs was founded in 1994 by Jim Lovell, of JTL Timing Systems and Jon Kunitake, of Kunitake Coffee Farms in order to revitalize running on the west side of the Big Island of Hawaii. We are proud to have a long history with UCC Coffee as our title sponsor for this event.
In 2009 the event was purchased by Sharron Faff, the current Race Director. Jim Lovell continues to play a major role in the coordination and timing of the events. In addition, Sharron expanded the professional management team to guide the events to new levels. 2017 marked the 24th Anniversary of the events and we are proud of our accomplishments as an organization to help our national and local charity partners raise over 19 million dollars in the last 24 years.
We are proud to announce that in 2015 the Kona Marathon was voted the #1 Destination Marathon for the State of Hawaii by Trip Advisor.
In 2015 we were excited to introduce our new host hotel, the Hilton Waikoloa Village at the Waikoloa Beach Resort with the Start & Finish at the Waikoloa Bowl near the Queens’ MarketPlace. The new venue will allow the event to continue to grow for many years to come.
We have grown into the Big Island’s premiere athletic event with over 2,000 participants, offering four road race distances; Marathon, Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and 5K. In addition we present the Kona Commons Aloha Keiki Run, and the Health & Fitness Fair.
The seventh annual Kona Commons Aloha Keiki Run is a fun, safe, family event held the weekend prior to the Kona Marathon. Every child ages 1-15 is a winner in age related distances from 100 yards to 1 mile.
The Health & Fitness Fair is a fun all-day family friendly event that is open to the public at no charge. With over 30 booths, entertainment, speakers series and food for over 3,000 attendees. The fair also serves as packet and race number pick-up for all Kona Marathon and Family Run participants.
As we continue to grow we are focused on providing a safe, quality experience for athletes of all levels and abilities running for health, fitness, enjoyment and raising money for charities.
